Fin's Father

There in the dark sat a man. He had a bushy grey beard and unkempt grey hair. On top of his head (hiding his bald spot) was a worn hat reading United States of America. It was a relic from a bygone time.
The man's name was Zach. He had a terminal condition; blood cancer. He had less than 2 months to live. Strangely enough, this didn't scare him but instead brought freedom to him. He decided to choose his own exit from this world.

UNLIKELY HEROES
I awoke to nature’s call. The taste in my mouth confirmed that I’d drank a lot of beer before falling asleep. It was dark, and I had no idea what time it was. There on the bank of the Ohio River, the water looked like it went on forever in the moonlight.

The ‘OX’ Spot
Carl was excited.
He’d gotten married just 2 weeks earlier. After years of failed relationships, he’d married one of the girls that we’d often thought of as just one of the guys.
Stacey was short and a little plump. She was the only girl in a family of boys, and she was tough. In Junior High we knew she’d broken up with Scott when he came to school with a black eye. Six years later, he still hadn’t lived it down. Nowadays, she worked for her father’s house-building business. …

The sign said “Green Garden Estates”. It had a waterfall beneath it. This was an upscale subdivision. Lawns were perfect; cars were nice. It was the lack of things that really stood out. Here, a 5-year old car was overdue to be traded in. A weekend of shopping might top $500. This was not the kind of neighborhood I expected the directions to take me to.
As I neared the house, I could feel my extra senses tingling. Someone talented, someone that could reach into another realm was nearby…

IF ONLY WE COULD BOTTLE THAT
I’m not sure exactly when I woke up. I don’t know exactly where the line is between being unconscious and conscious. I do know that I was very confused.
“Mr. Grains, you’ve been in a traffic accident. You’re in the hospital; we’re taking care of you.” Her face was pleasant, but there was something wrong. There was something she wasn’t telling me. She gave me a plastic smile and walked away.
